Youth and maths at Oslo Chatedral School
Paul Jasper, the headmaster of Oslo Chatedral School, and professor Jens Erik Fenstad, chairman of the Abel Board, welcomed the guests of honour, Sir Michael Atiyah and Isadore Singer.
Paul Jasper then took us through the history of the school that dates back to 1153. Oslo Cathedral School posesses a unique collection of books, some of them several hundred years old. By studying the protocols from the library it is possible to tell which books Abel read.
The winners of the competition "The Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel in the French tradition, three students from L'Institution des Chartreux in Lyon, presented their project on Abel's famous Paris treatise.
The winners of the Norwegian KappAbel-competition from Tynset ungdomsskole presented their project about music and mathematics. They used the church organ in their local church as an excemple.
Jon Strand, the leader of the students' association, hosted the event.
