The Abel Prize Laureate 2003

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has decided to award the Abel Prize for 2003 to:

Jean-Pierre Serre

Collège de France, Paris, France,

"for playing a key role in shaping the modern form of many parts of mathematics, including topology, algebraic geometry and number theory".

Jean-Pierre Serre received the Abel Prize from the hands of His Majesty King Harald V during a solemn ceremony in the Great Hall of the University of Oslo on the 3rd of June.

Jean-Pierre Serre delivered an Abel Lecture entitled "Prime numbers, equations and modular forms" at the Georg Sverdrup building at the University of Oslo on the 2nd of June. On the 4th, the Abel Symposium was held at the same location.

Since the creation of the Abel Prize, inculcating interest in mathematics among children and young people has been extremely important. In connection with the very first Abel Prize Award in 2003, a Mathematics Fair was held on University Square in Oslo.
