The Abel Prize Award Ceremony took place in the University of Oslo Aula on May the 25th. The Abel Laureates were met by a newly composed Abel Fanfare when they entered the Aula. The Abel Fanfare is composed by Klaus Sandvik and performed by Sidsel Walstad on solo electronic harp.

The procession was led by Lars Walløe, the president of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and Erling Størmer, the chairman of the Abel Committee.

Isadore Singer, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Sir Michael Atiyah, University of Edinburgh, were awarded the Abel Prize "for their discovery and proof of the index theorem, bringing together topology, geometry and analysis, and their outstanding role in building new bridges between mathematics and theoretical physics", to quote the Abel Committee's citation. Erling Størmer, the chairman of the Abel Committee, elaborated in his speech on the committee's choice.
